10 of the Best RPG Games of All Time

These RPGs Will Keep You in Suspense Until You Finish Them or Die Trying

These are some of the greatest RPG games to date and I hope that you will all check them out. The story lines in these RPGs are involving, the graphics are excellent, and the game play is a little bit different in each
one of them. For more information on any game in this list, simply click the game name in the subtitle.

#1 Best RPG of All Time, Chrono trigger.

Crono trigger is a game that revolves around a changing, and evolving time line. Chrono Trigger offers multiple endings based on choices and scenarios you encounter through the game, features anime stylized graphics, has an involving story line, and it's gameplay is the best of it's time. This RPG has gone down in history as the greatest RPG of all time and that's not just my opinion.

#2 Best RPG of All Time, Ys everything from 'Origins' to 'Oath in Felghana'.

While Ys is more of an adventure RPG with the later titles more closely resembling 'Zelda' then 'Final Fantasy' in gameplay mechanics. YS is an awesome series with a great storyline. Many of the Japanese PC versions have translation patches available now, so get them while they're hot!

#3 Best RPG of All Time, Final Fantasy VII.

Final fantasy 7 is placed in a futuristic semi mechanical world running on materia an element which is best described as being crystallized souls mined from the earth. The game was one of the first to take a real 3D setting in the RPG genre, and had an extremely involving storyline which may have been hard to follow for some.

#4 Best RPG of All Time, Star Ocean 2.

Star ocean 2 for the PS1 and PS2 was a great game that managed to capture an elegant blend of 2D sprites in a 3D world with the anime look that so many love and enjoy. The game starts you off on a ship with your father which crashes on a strange planet. Once there your heroin the star of the story approaches an odd device, and is suddenly transported to another world. This game features many of the same game play mechanics that made the entire Tales of series so loved, with real time battles, and direct control over your characters.

#5 Best RPG of All Time, Tales of Symphonia.

Tales of symphonia for the Game Cube was a great game where you actually directly controlled your characters in battle. The game mechanics supported combos, special skills, and real time battles. The storyline in Tales
of Symphonia has you captured right from the start, and simply won't let you go until you have finished it.
#6 Best RPG of All Time, Suikoden Series 1,2,3,4,5, and tactics.

One of the greatest things about the Suikoden series is that you can load a save game from a prior series, to continue from where you left off. This game series is extremely long and has a nicely done anime style. Suikoden 4 broke away from the rest of the series, breaking off the transfer of game data from 3 to 4 but allowed transfer to tactics, and also created a beautiful new world, with great graphics, and involving game play. This is by far one of the greatest RPG games released to date.
#7 Best RPG of All Time, Lunar Silver Star Story.

This was one of the first RPG games to implement anime CG cut scenes, and did an excellent job of it. This making you fall in love with your characters as they evolve through the story lines intricate twists and turns. The Lunar games have next to chrono trigger one of the most involving story lines I've ever found in an RPG.
#8 Best RPG of All Time, Dragon Warrior VII.

By far the best in the series of dragon Warrior games. This game has you in a world cut off and segregated from the rest of the world. Starting off on an island that knows nothing of the existence of the rest of the world. Your hero finds an alter deep in a cave which takes him away to a special place in history, where another land has been sealed off from existence. From here you repair the time line, and bring the world back to it's rightful place. The battle mechanics are much like the prior dragon warrior games with a first person perspective in battle, but also feature an auto attack function for those who don't appreciate the tediousness of the battles.
#9 Best RPG of All Time, Final Fantasy VI SNES.

There is a 3D Nintendo DS remake of this game available now, which I have yet to try since I can't get passed the tiny screen... However, it appears to be a great game. Final Fantasy VI carries the weight of it's predecessors, and fulfills it's obligation to meet the demands of it's consumers with great gameplay mechanics, a long and involving story, and what would have, for it's time, been considered excellent graphics. The game starts you off as some random girl in what looks like a mech warrior suit with no recollection of her passed. Shortly into the game she will be knocked off the suit and regain consciousness, still with no memory and a sudden realization that she can use magic.

#10 Best RPG of All Time, Baiten Kaitos.

Baiten Kaitos went a whole other direction when it comes to gameplay and battle mechanics. While it meets the traditional console RPG demands, it innovates upon them with a yugi oh style card battle system. Baiten Kaitos has excellent graphics and an interesting storyline. My brother in law has never played or liked RPG games, but even he played this one through to the end!
10 of The Best RPGs of all Time, Closing.

Other great games include Xeno Gears, Xeno Saga, Legend of Dragoon (though the translation sucks),
Final Fantasy 8,9,10, and Chrono Cross. If you are in the market for a long game with an involving story, you should give any one of these a try. These RPGs are sure to keep you busy for hours on end, if not days.
