Gamescom: Mass Effect 2 PS3 Details

BioWare's doctors talk about moving to Sony's platform.

PlayStation 3 owners got some great news when Gamescom 2010 kicked off, and it wasn't just during Sony's presentation where a Resistance 3 trailer was shown and a new Ratchet game announced. Just before Sony's event kicked off Electronic Arts held its own press conference, where Drs. Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk walked on stage and told everyone that Mass Effect 2 will be coming out on PlayStation 3. As many who've already played it will tell you, Mass Effect 2 is one of 2010's great titles and very much admired here at IGN.

So now that the previously Xbox 360 and PC-only franchise is going to show up on PS3, what does that mean about the franchise in general? And what exactly will you be getting when Mass Effect 2 for PS3 is made available?

"There's going to be a brief introductory element to the game that takes you through the events of [Mass Effect] and introduces you to [Mass Effect 2]," said Zeschuk. "And then there's just that fundamental difference of the fact that it's a different platform with different pros and cons and a different controller. The content's largely the same."

Will that be a playable intro or a video you watch to get up to speed on the events of the first Mass Effect? "We haven't revealed the details yet," said Muzyka, "but the goal is to provide a great introductory experience that gives you the context and frames who you are as a character."

Because Mass Effect 2 was able to make it across the platform gap, one would assume the inevitable Mass Effect 3 would be a multi-console release. "We haven't even announced that game yet. Defining the products for an unannounced product would be quite challenging," said Muzyka with a smile. "We've always said it's a trilogy. It would be a good guess to, once we bring a new product to a platform, we'd probably want to continue that, but we just haven't announced it yet."

Moving back to Mass Effect 2, what about all the downloadable content that's been released for other versions of the game? "We're going to be exploring what we want to pack in as far as DLC goes. The overall packages are still being finalized."

So when and why did production start on a PS3 version of Mass Effect 2? "We got asked a lot by the press, asked a lot by the fans," said Zeschuk. "It's also very timely that we're doing it here at Gamescom. You want to get your game to as many people as possible, you want to have the broadest possible audience. In Europe, the PlayStation 3 is quite strong and growing rapidly. The same in the U.S., but particularly in Europe."

That's about all that's available for now. PS3 owners should get ready to start scanning planets in January 2011.
