Obsidian boss, Feargus Urquhart has told IncGamers that "choice matters" in RPG titles, and it's these choices which determine a true RPG from a game which has RPG elements.
In an interview with IGTV at E3 this year about upcoming Dungeon Siege 3, Urquhart said RPG can be confused with other genres, and sometimes it's hard to even catergorise RPGs, but it's the choice given to the player that determines whether the game would be an RPG or not.
"This is what I think matters and this is what I love about making role-playing games is that choice.
"If you don't offer different endings, you don't offer ramifications then you don't have consequences," he said.
We've seen many titles that try to incorporate RPG elements into the game, but don't offer the consequences which Urquhart talks about. Games such as Bayonetta, Dante's Inferno and even Borderlands, where the story has been predetermined.
"The consequences mean that if I chose to do 'this', then 'this' is going to happen and not 'this'." explained Urquhart.
"That kind of changes the game and I think it also really does, which I think is more unique to role-playing games, is deployability."
The full video interview will go live later today, so make sure you check back for the latest news.
